Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs

LANSS combines neuropathic symptom questions with clinician-elicited signs. This page is for clinics. It is not a public self-test and not a diagnosis.

What is the LANSS?

LANSS is not a client-only questionnaire in its original form. Sign items belong with a clinician. A result does not replace neurological examination or nerve investigation.

Development and clinical use

Bennett published the LANSS Pain Scale in 2001. Section A asks five weighted questions about the last week, section B records two bedside sensory tests, and the total runs from 0 to 24 with a published cut-off of 12.

A focused clinician rating

LANSS is completed as a focused clinician rating and stored for clinician review. This public page does not collect answers or return a score.

  • One rated item at a time with visible progress
  • Keyboard-operable response choices
  • Previous, next, and review steps for the rater
  • Clear confirmation that the rating is stored for clinic review

Designed to make evidence easy to review

The downloadable synthetic example illustrates report layout using invented response patterns, without patient data or instrument questions.

  • Named instrument, version, and provenance
  • Item-level response pattern without source wording
  • Methodology, references, and clinical boundary
  • Responsible clinician review rather than automated conclusions

Understand the measure and its scoring conventions

Published scoring conventions may exist in official materials. This public page does not independently verify scoring, cutoffs, or a production scoring rule. Use the official form and scoring instructions for the version you intend to use.

What clinics ask before they evaluate the LANSS

These answers stay inside educational catalogue scope. They do not replace official manuals or clinician judgement.

Can a client complete LANSS alone?

No. Section B is bedside sensory testing, so Lirena records LANSS on the clinician-rated completion page and never sends it to the client portal.

Does LANSS diagnose neuropathic pain?

No. It screens features. Diagnosis remains a clinician task.

Can I complete it here?

No. This landing is educational.

Is S-LANSS the same instrument?

Self-report adaptations are different products and must be named separately.

Bring a pain pathway. See it run in Lirena.
