What is the BPRS?

The Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale rates 18 symptom constructs after interview. This catalogue entry is Guy's 1976 ECDEU form 047-BPRS, not the 16-item or 24-item variants.

Development and clinical use

Overall and Gorham published BPRS in 1962. The ECDEU manual (Guy, 1976) prints the 18-item form and the five factor means used here.

A focused clinician rating

A clinician rates the 18 constructs in the clinician completion view. Lirena does not send BPRS to the client.

  • One rated item at a time with visible progress
  • Keyboard-operable response choices
  • Previous, next, and review steps for the rater
  • Clear confirmation that the rating is stored for clinic review

  • Item-level response pattern without source wording
  • Methodology, references, and clinical boundary
  • Responsible clinician review rather than automated conclusions

Understand the measure and its scoring conventions

Each construct is rated from 1 (not present) to 7 (extremely severe). The total is the sum, 18-126. Factor scores are means of Anxiety-Depression, Anergia, Thought Disturbance, Activation, and Hostile-Suspiciousness, each 1.00-7.00. No cutoff is applied. The form's 0 = Not assessed is not a rating.
