Sleep Hygiene Index
The Sleep Hygiene Index is a self-report of sleep-related habits. This page is for clinics. It is not a diagnosis of insomnia and not a treatment plan.
Overview
What is the SHI?
The SHI asks about habits that can affect sleep. It is not a diagnosis of insomnia or another sleep disorder, and it does not prescribe sleep-hygiene treatment.
Development and clinical use
Mastin, Bryson and Corwyn published the 13-item SHI in 2006 to assess sleep hygiene behaviours.

Administration
A focused client experience
Respondents rate how often each of 13 statements about sleep-related habits and surroundings applies to them, from Never (0) to Always (4).
- One question at a time with visible progress
- Large keyboard-operable response choices
- Previous, next, and answer-review steps
- Clear confirmation that results go to the clinic
The illustration shows layout only. It does not reproduce SHI item wording.
Report showcase
Designed to make evidence easy to review
The downloadable synthetic example illustrates report layout using invented response patterns, without patient data or instrument questions.
- Named instrument, version, and provenance
- Item-level response pattern without source wording
- Methodology, references, and clinical boundary
- Responsible clinician review rather than automated conclusions
Clinician review required
Methodology
Understand the measure and its scoring conventions
Published scoring adds the 13 items for a total from 0 to 52, where a higher score indicates poorer sleep hygiene. The source index defines no cutoff score. This public page does not independently verify scoring, cutoffs, or a production scoring rule.

Questions
What clinics ask before they evaluate the SHI
These answers stay inside educational catalogue scope. They do not replace official manuals or clinician judgement.
Does a high SHI score diagnose insomnia?
No. It describes habits, not a disorder. Diagnosis and treatment remain clinician tasks.
Can I complete SHI here?
No. This page does not collect answers or prescribe habits.
How is SHI used on Lirena?
As a sleep-intake self-report. Clinicians review habit patterns with other sleep history.
Is SHI a treatment programme?
No. It is a questionnaire about habits. Any advice remains with the responsible clinician.
