Daytime Insomnia Symptom Scale
The Daytime Insomnia Symptom Scale captures daytime symptoms associated with insomnia. This page is for clinics. It is not a diagnosis and not a public test.
Overview
What is the DISS?
DISS was published as a daytime-symptom instrument using repeated visual analog ratings rather than a single night-time insomnia total. It is not a stand-alone insomnia diagnosis and is not interchangeable with ISI.
Development and clinical use
Buysse and colleagues published DISS in a 2007 ecological momentary assessment study of daytime symptoms in primary insomnia.

Administration
A focused client experience
The published protocol collects 20 visual analog ratings four times a day, at waking, noon, 6 pm and bedtime, for a week. On Lirena each assigned rating is a mark from 0 to 100. This public page does not collect those ratings.
- One question at a time with visible progress
- Large keyboard-operable response choices
- Previous, next, and answer-review steps
- Clear confirmation that results go to the clinic
The illustration shows layout only. It does not reproduce DISS item wording.
Report showcase
Designed to make evidence easy to review
The downloadable synthetic example illustrates report layout using invented response patterns, without patient data or instrument questions.
- Named instrument, version, and provenance
- Item-level response pattern without source wording
- Methodology, references, and clinical boundary
- Responsible clinician review rather than automated conclusions
Clinician review required
Methodology
Understand the measure and its scoring conventions
Lirena stores each of the 20 marks as its own score from 0 to 100. This release does not compute the 2007 factor scores, and there is no total. The ratings support clinician review and are not a diagnosis.

Questions
What clinics ask before they evaluate the DISS
These answers stay inside educational catalogue scope. They do not replace official manuals or clinician judgement.
Does DISS diagnose insomnia?
No. It is a self-report of daytime symptoms. Diagnosis remains a clinician task.
Can I complete DISS here?
No. This landing is educational.
How is DISS used on Lirena?
As a sleep-intake self-report. Clinicians review the result with other sleep history.
Is DISS the same as ISI?
No. ISI rates insomnia severity. DISS focuses on daytime symptom experience across the day.
