Greene Climacteric Scale
The Greene Climacteric Scale is a 21-item menopause-symptom self-report scored as six subscale sums. It is not a diagnosis and not a public test.
Overview
What is the GCS?
GCS asks how much each of 21 symptoms bothers the respondent at the moment. It supports clinician review of psychological, somatic, vasomotor and sexuality symptoms. It does not diagnose menopause, does not prescribe HRT, and does not replace medical history.
Development and clinical use
Greene published the standard 21-item climacteric scale in 1998 from the symptoms that at least three factor-analytic studies agreed on. It was designed so that each symptom group is measured separately rather than added into one menopause index.

Administration
A focused client experience
GCS is completed as a focused self-report and stored for clinician review. This public page does not collect answers or return a score.
- One question at a time with visible progress
- Large keyboard-operable response choices
- Previous, next, and answer-review steps
- Clear confirmation that results go to the clinic

Report showcase
Designed to make evidence easy to review
The downloadable synthetic example illustrates report layout using invented response patterns, without patient data or instrument questions.
- Named instrument, version, and provenance
- Item-level response pattern without source wording
- Methodology, references, and clinical boundary
- Responsible clinician review rather than automated conclusions
Clinician review required
Methodology
Understand the measure and its scoring conventions
Each of the 21 symptoms is rated Not at all (0), A little (1), Quite a bit (2) or Extremely (3). Greene (1998) scores six subscales as simple sums: psychological (items 1 to 11), anxiety (items 1 to 6), depressed mood (items 7 to 11), somatic (items 12 to 18), vasomotor (items 19 and 20) and sexuality (item 21). The scale has no total score and no published cut-off or severity bands.

Questions
What clinics ask before they evaluate the GCS
These answers stay inside educational catalogue scope. They do not replace official manuals or clinician judgement.
Does GCS diagnose menopause?
No. Menopause status is a clinical determination. This is a symptom questionnaire.
Why is there no total score?
Greene designed the scale so that psychological, somatic, vasomotor and sexuality symptoms are measured separately. The published scoring reports subscale sums only.
Can I complete GCS here?
No. This landing is educational.
Does a score recommend HRT?
No. Treatment decisions remain with the responsible clinician.
Is GCS the same as MRS?
No. They are different menopause-symptom instruments.
