Menopause symptom measurement

Menopause Rating Scale

The Menopause Rating Scale is an 11-item menopause-symptom self-report. This page is for clinics. It is not a diagnosis, not an HRT recommendation, and not a public test.

What is the MRS?

MRS asks which of 11 menopausal symptoms apply at this time and how severe each one is. It supports clinician review of psychological, somato-vegetative and urogenital symptom severity. It does not establish menopause status by itself and does not prescribe treatment.

Development and clinical use

Heinemann, Potthoff and Schneider developed and standardised the Menopause Rating Scale as a self-administered scale, first in German and then in English and other languages.

A focused client experience

MRS is completed as a focused self-report and stored for clinician review. This public page does not collect answers or return a score.

  • One question at a time with visible progress
  • Large keyboard-operable response choices
  • Previous, next, and answer-review steps
  • Clear confirmation that results go to the clinic

Designed to make evidence easy to review

The downloadable synthetic example illustrates report layout using invented response patterns, without patient data or instrument questions.

  • Named instrument, version, and provenance
  • Item-level response pattern without source wording
  • Methodology, references, and clinical boundary
  • Responsible clinician review rather than automated conclusions

Understand the measure and its scoring conventions

Each symptom is rated none (0), mild (1), moderate (2), severe (3) or very severe (4). The psychological (items 4 to 7), somato-vegetative (items 1, 2, 3 and 11) and urogenital (items 8 to 10) subscale scores are sums, and the total of 0 to 44 is the sum of the three. The published total-score severity categories are no or little (0 to 4), mild (5 to 8), moderate (9 to 16) and severe (17 or more).

What clinics ask before they evaluate the MRS

These answers stay inside educational catalogue scope. They do not replace official manuals or clinician judgement.

Does MRS diagnose menopause?

No. It is a symptom scale. Clinical history and, where relevant, investigation remain separate.

Can I complete MRS here?

No. This page does not collect answers or recommend HRT.

Is MRS the same as GCS?

No. They are different instruments.

How is MRS used on Lirena?
